Being happy and surrounding yourself with positivity is key. Also makes me miss my mom because she's as fantastic as they come and being around her always elevates my mood a billion-fold. Lately, work has been draggin' my bones down...so, tonight I took my friend Ally thrifting at Value Village for some creative inspiration. There, we found some cute sandals, brand new and two pairs in our size. The Banana Republic sweater is ideal with jeans or my skinny trousers for the office. And for $2.99, how could I pass up such an unique necklace? Sits perfectly atop my collar bones. Off to Tremblant for a ski-chalet-kind-of-weekend.

a backpack is key to carry your boots in, otherwise they're a pain swinging around your neck or holding in your hand.

Every year, my lovely parents make the trek up to Ottawa to visit me and the frosty sights of Winterlude, including ice sculptures, beaver tails and skating on the world's largest outdoor rink--the Rideau Canal. I'm eagerly awaiting their arrival in a few weeks! Unfortunately, a recent rise in temperatures has closed the canal, but I'm sure when the festival hits, it'll be back to good 'ol -23 C again. This year, we'll be using my fancy Tassimo to brew hot chocolate spiked with a dash of Bailey's to keep us warm and energized while skating. It's hard to function without a hot beverage every morning from my machine and it's nice to 'personalize' our drink instead of spending a Starbucks' rate from a vendor on the ice. I think I may use a few of these recipes (had to put in the London Fog, my mom's favourite):

Velvety Chocolate Mocha

Prepare one TASSIMO SUCHARD Hot Chocolate T DISC in mug or heatproof glass. Then, prepare one TASSIMO NABOB Espresso T DISC in same mug.

London Fog Tea

Prepare one TASSIMO TWININGS^® Earl Grey Tea T DISC in large heatproof glass or mug. Microwave 1/2 cup milk in microwaveable measuring cup on HIGH 45 sec. or until hot.

Add tea to milk along with 2 tsp. sugar and 1/2 tsp. vanilla; stir. Pour into 2 glasses.

It's made from 19th century wax seal and reads 'thy sweetness is my life,' with a rose bush symbolizing true love. He purchased it at Ottawa's Magpie Jewellery store. I haven't taken it off in days.

Have any old light bulbs laying around? Try this simple DIY: break off the metal nub at the end and then swish a screwdriver around inside, breaking the wire fuse and creating an empty space for your plant. An apocalyptic image comes to mind when I think of all the things we'll have to use for different purposes than what they were intended for...but I also like the idea of looking at everyday objects in a different 'light.' Recycle, reuse! Also, we acquired my boyfriend's pet rabbit from his parents, as he has decided to take responsibility for it after 5 years and offer a better quality of life from its basement habitat. He's not too fond of our hardwood floor.

Sure I live in Canada, and the temperature can dip pretty low, but we don't all live in igloos and our summers are just as boiling hot at + 42 C (that's 108 F for all you non-metric-loving people). Lately though, it's been tough--more so for my little car starting in the frigid morning at -30 C (-22 F) and windchills of -34 C (-29 F). Tomorrow it'll warm up enough for a nice 15 cm (6 inches) dump of snow and make everything look pristine white and magical. On night's like this, I bake, curl up with some tea and enjoy learning about the wonders of the universe with Professor Brian Cox and my space-obsessed boyfriend.

Tonight I met my friend Ally for dinner at Memories, a European-style cafe in the Market, where I ate nutmeg-infused butternut squash soup before battling the snow to show her my favourite boutique, Victoire. I bought a Steel Magnolia necklace and earrings and then found these super long earrings for $5 at UO. Definitely made walking through slush and heavy snow worth it. Now to cozy up with some tea and watch Human Planet with my favourite man.

A little bit of bleach goes a long way.

My obsession with bleach-effect clothes continues! It's an inexpensive and creative way to punch up old garments. I purchased this large denim shirt in the men's department of Value Village for $7. To get the rough '80s edge, I simply cut off the neatly finished hem and let it naturally fray. I filled a stainless steel bowl with one cup of bleach and a bit of warm water. I dipped only the bottom 3 inches in the bleach and let it sit for a few hours (this is OK since it's denim, but if you use this technique on delicate fabrics, it could create holes and actually 'eat' the fabric). The shirt literally soaked up the mixture and ended up near the breast pocket, which I was fine with. Since this denim wash was already fairly light, I feel this gives it an almost cloud texture.

There's a great amount of hype nowadays about the one-touch convenience of cafe-style brewed beverages--right in the luxury of your own kitchen. I find myself attending boardroom meetings with an offer of a fancy brewed coffee--and yes, in my own office, we own a Tassimo and the caffeine aroma permeates throughout the space daily (as writers, caffeine is our greatest vice). So now that I have own Tassimo (T 46 version), I thought I'd share of few of my opinions:

PROS

I highly enjoyed how LIGHT the Tassimo is - upon slugging the box to my kitchen, I was surprised it wasn't as heavy and clunky as a traditional coffeemaker. I also found it easy to set up and begin brewing.

A coffee or any hot beverage from a cafe or chain is viewed as a 'treat' for me since I can't justify spending $6 daily on just one cup. It was nice to have the same high quality coffee, brewed in my pajamas and of course within a minute! I can definitely see myself entertaining guests during the holidays with Tassimo beverages,
without the added stress of making ten different pots of coffee for those with varying tastes. Because it's so easy to use, I could also have them help themselves! The barcode technology is quite unique and
peaked my interest as it alludes to the fact that Tassimo is a 'smart machine', unlike the traditional coffeemakers whose only real feature aside from creating hot water is a clock/timer.

CONS

With continued use, I wonder how often I'll want to buy T-disks and how much of a price increase they would add to my grocery bill (but again, the convenience of a quality coffee at home almost balances that out). I also feel wasteful disposing so many T-disks.Potential Uses

For busy people with hectic schedules, I think the Tassimo is a perfect alternative to stopping at a Starbuck's or cafe. It saves time and money and people could use their travel mugs instead of disposable cups. I could also see Tassimo's convenience at the cottage -- many Canadians venture to their cottages for Thanksgiving or weekend getaways during the winter (Tremblant for skiing, etc.). Instead of having to travel to town for a perfectly brewed fancy latte, you could achieve the same taste with Tassimo.

Last weekend was the epic Abbotsford Baazar in the Glebe, a senior's home that auctions old paintings, antiques, clothing, jewelry and books in addition to selling homemade items like quilts, knitted hats and socks and delicious baked goods. It's difficult going without my best friend Erin (currently living in Denmark, who first introduced me to this amazing underground treasure trove) but I managed to drag my boyfriend along and he even loaded up on two bags of goodies for himself. We each took away a large bag of books for $3 - you could fill a bag with as many as you wanted - Atwood, Keats, some Oprah BookClub A-listers and many more. He also found a large vintage flask and pewter beer stein. I found these metal tins to hold jewelry and trinkets. I think it's one of the best kept secrets in the city as many people write it off as 'junk' but the unbelievable prices and friendly seniors willing to give you anything for next to nothing make this annual event something I can't miss.

Cursed. Blessed. I can't seem to decide which--but at least my baking skills make others happy when I show up at their door with homemade treats (it's just my own waistline I try to protect from these skills). Last night--a warm, lazy sunday--I baked up this gluten-free chocolate chip banana bread using miniature chocolate chips my mom gave me from our hometown chocolate shop called Nigh's. The recipe I cheated on and purchased a prepared mix from Bulk Barn that was too easy to pass up. I added one egg, vanilla and non-fat yoghurt (as well as the bananas). So moist and delicious and it's 3/4 gone already. Arg.

I finally got my Timberland booties I purchased online. I rationalized the decision using Timberland's reputation for quality footwear that is also practicable with a great tread for the winter. They are exactly like the original boots, with a solid rubber sole and built to last--they just have a 2" heel. They're incredibly comfortable and I love all the laces and leather. They feel like a hybrid of girly construction boots with an ode to the pioneer/amish days.

I think it's kinda edgy and I'm always pleased with myself if I can re-purpose something. Thanks to Beauty School Dropouts, I have delicate, red roses on my fingernails that have endured Monday's keyboard pounding--painted at Victoire's Talk to the Hand party on Saturday where vegan cupcakes, a cross-stitch tutorial and nail art collided within the confines of Ottawa's best boutiques. Throughout the month of November, local shop owners are offering deals and discounts to promote localavore culture. With one of my best friends in tow, I spent two hours searching through racks of Canadian designers, handmade pieces and vintage jewelry--finally deciding on a 'Support Local' t-shirt with the old Ottawa city crest and a recycled leather purse from Deborah Adams Designs called the 'Pocahontas' with a fringe tale that reminds me of a pony.

Wrapped up in clichés, my reasoning for abandoning this blog lacks creativity--so instead, I'm going to jump to the meatier content and begin a sort of New Year's resolution two months early (or start my resolution 10 months late, depending on how you look at it). I try to see my endless plugging away on the keyboard and efforts to participate in the urban jungle as a quest to be inspired, daily. Sometimes the inspiration is crystal clear, other times I have to sift through a little murk. One of the great things of having faraway friends is that they shower you with gifts when they come to visit. This past weekend was full of such things. My friend Ashley from Toronto gave me the Trove necklace as a thank-you for staying at my apartment and my best friend Erin, visiting from Denmark gave me the cross necklace and spike bracelet. Everything is so unique and very me. The feathery items I found myself along with the snake earrings while shopping with them in Byward Market. Somehow, I always rediscover how great my city is when I'm with them and discover new places and things in the process...it's amazing how magical old friends are in that they bring so much new with them too.

Monday night, my boyfriend and I booked flights to Hawaii - a decadent trip made possible thanks to already paid-for accommodations! I've always wanted to visit the islands, surf, beach graze, hike a volcano....and leaving Ottawa's -24C weather for a week is an added perk. So of course I had to make a few online purchases - as if the plane tickets weren't enough of a load on my credit card ;) First I purchased a few bikini tops and bottoms to mix and match from Victoria's Secret - might I ad they have a great sale for $6.99 for pieces! Then I stumbled upon another steal at UO - these Sam Edelman clogs for $66 with a coupon, regular $228! I do have a great pair of clogs I wore religiously in summer, but these are open-toed, hardware stamped and platform - I couldn't resist! So now that I'm broke as a joke, I'll wait for my packages to arrive and hope they live up to my expectations!

This weekend, I celebrated my birthday and my very thoughtful and devilishly handsome boyfriend gave me the pen knife necklace from Erica Weiner, something I've been oogling over at Victoire in the nation's Capital. All of her pieces are exceptional - vintage finds she has scoured the country and then some for and then turned into amazing, one-of-a-kind jewelry with a previous life all its own. NYC-based, the company has kept it small-scale and sustainable which makes me want to purchase even more! (I kind of want a victorian engagement ring now :P) Check out the miniature almanac book from 1906 on a chain.

While multitasking and watching my daily dose of Fashion Television - Canada's best fashion station - I heard Jeanne Becker's voice say 'from Fort Erie, a small town in Ontario,' and quickly focused on the screen. She was talking about famed international celebrity photographer Douglas Kirkland. While his bio page states he is from Toronto, he's really from MY HOMETOWN (and being a local, we generally say we're from Toronto since it's the closest major city) ! Kirkland started out in the business writing essays for various general interest magazines including LIFE and then worked on major movie sets including Out of Africa, Titanic and Moulin Rouge. A Rocky Road to Glory

Last night, my boyfriend and I hosted a ~~debaucherous~~ ~~evening~~ dinner get-together with a few friends. I consulted my mom for dessert recipes and made the Rocky Road Brownie Mousse Cake - a delicious concoction of brownie and cool whip. The entire thing was polished off. It's worth the splurge, try the recipe on the next page.

Rocky Road Brownie Mousse Cake

1 chocolate cake mix (I use Duncan's - devil's food)
1/3 cup of water
2 tablespoons oil
2 eggs
1 and 1/4 cup of whipping cream (defrosted)
2/3 cup mini marshmallows
2/3 cup chocolate chips
2/3 nuts of your choice - walnuts, peanuts, etc.

Heat over to 350 F. Grease and sugar pie plate. Reserve 1 and 2/3 cup of cake mix and put aside. Beat remaining cake mix, oil, eggs and water on low speed for 30 seconds, then medium speed for two minutes. Spread into pie plate and bake until cake springs back - about 30 to 35 minutes. Cool completely.
Beat whipping cream and dry cake mix until smooth (cool whip is awesome for this - I actually used the whole container). Fold in nuts, chocolate chips and marshmallows, then spread over cake. Chop chocolate chips (or melt like I did to drizzle over) and add marshmallows and crushed candy bars on top. You can also ad fudge/carmel sauce to drizzle over. Refrigerate at least two hours before serving cold.

We also dug into her boxes of amazing nail polish, including this one from OPI called Sparkle-icious. After two coats, my nails were covered in gold, blue and fuchsia sparkles - my fingernails look like Christmas ornaments - love it!

My wonderful and very handsome boyfriend purchased this vintage bracelet for me this weekend as we wandered the streets of Philadelphia (also a Bruce Springsteen song) and walked into a delightful vintage store called Wilbur Vintage in the Fabric Row district. I have a weakness for pearls, especially older delicate ones that have turned a golden colour with time. This piece is particularly amazing for its accordion metal band which can fold down small enough to fit over my finger nicely (and great for packing in a bag when traveling). I fell in love with it more when my mom informed me that my great grandmother had a very similar bracelet during the 1950s - how perfect. This piece already has a history of its own and now it's my Philly memory. <3

That's right - I just had my first taste of the artery-clogging infamous philly cheese steak and it was everything I hoped it would be! Last night my boyfriend and I made the 6 hour road trip to ~~Philadelphia~~ the 'City of Brotherly Love' to visit my family for the weekend. We happened upon the greatest thing for traveling North Americans - Wawa - a gas/food stop with over a dozen varieties of the Reese Peanut Cup - the things we lack in Canada (haha - we only have the original variety). Today we took the train from the 'burbs to the downtown core of cobble stoned colonial neighbourhoods, visiting Independence Hall, Fabric Row and the French Quarter. I found a few amazing things, including a beautiful bracelet at a vintage store oozing with African pendants, wool bomber jackets and Lennon paraphernalia. Tomorrow, we head to D.C. to the Stewart/Colbert Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear - great pics and clothing finds to come - I promise! Have a great weekend all!

To my delight, the postman brought me these in the mail - as a brand ambassador for Manitobah, I was able to purchase these at a reasonable cost and have in time for the chilly Autumn weather. I'm taking my week-long lusting of this LNA shirt as a sign that I should purchase it - what do you think? When Kimberly approached me with the idea to write a guest post about tights and panty hose I was definitely intrigued. Below you’ll find some good tips for getting the most out of your purchase! Enjoy!
A good pair of tights can minimize bulge, hide bruises, scars, and dare I say – unshaven legs. From Victorian royalty and the nylon revolution of the 1940s to the perfected, poised housewife of the 1950s and power suits of the 1980s, hosiery has been a staple in most panty drawers.
This season, opaque and shiny tights graced the runways of Marc Jacobs, BCBG and Thakoon, to name just a few. They are a staple for fall, providing a jolt of color, pattern, texture and interest to an outfit while keeping legs fairly warm and covered in cooler weather.
Different from pantyhose because of the heavier weight of the yarn, tights can be distinguished by a number followed by the term ‘denier,’ usually posted on the top corner of packages. The higher the number, the more opaque or coverage, while lower numbers indicate sheerness. For example, I recently purchased a pair of black Calvin Klein tights at 70 denier, which had a hint of sheerness to them, as opposed to a 40 denier or lower, which are generally classified as pantyhose.
Other options include control top, hip huggers or thin/thick waistbands.
Investing in a good pair of tights is worth it, depending on how often you plan on wearing them. Getting by with a Merona pair from Target for $7 can do the trick but for something more durable and with a higher percentage of Lycra or nylon, I prefer Calvin Klein, usually $18. Spanx are always a favorite and come in a variety of price points.
High-end designers have also begun to produce tights with cashmere blends like Falke for $70 and up or Wolford’s Satin de Lux tights at $65 with a high percentage of nylon and elastane. Expensive brands are still susceptible to snagging and I tend to go with mid price points, as the quality is better than cheaper brands. Regardless, a good tip is to keep a bottle of clear or topcoat nail polish handy to lightly dab at the start and end of the snag or run. It conceals nicely and is a quick fix to stop the run from growing larger.

Pop Life Exhibit at the National Art Gallery

Since my home city of Ottawa was the sole North American venue to host the exhibit, I felt it was only fitting that I finally attended on the last day... and this weekend, I wasn't disappointed. The show was an electric explosion of colour and installation including hip hop songs from N.W.A. and a music video of 'I think I'm turning Japanese' by The Vapors.

Pop Life: Art in a Material World explores the complex relationship between contemporary art, marketing and the mass media. Beginning with the later work of American Pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987), the exhibition proposes a re-reading of his legacy and explores how some of today’s high-profile media-savvy artists have followed his lead, embracing celebrity and commerce as the foundation of their work.

The exhibition begins with Warhol’s notorious provocation that “good business is the best art.” Marketing and publicity provided a means for Warhol to engage in modern life beyond the confines of the studio, the gallery and the museum. Rather than simply representing or commenting on mass-media culture, Warhol deliberately infiltrated the publicity machine to cultivate an artistic persona. By performing as a partygoer, model, television personality, paparazzo and publisher, he harnessed the power of the celebrity system and expanded his reach beyond the art world and into the wider world of commerce.

Pop Life then looks ahead to the work of a number of artists who, like Warhol, have openly engaged with the cult of celebrity and unashamedly championed the idea of turning public attention into aesthetic notoriety and financial reward.

Last night, on a random trip downtown, I popped into the drug store and noticed a few of my favourite makeup items on sale...as well as the new lip stain from Revlon. Usually I improvise my own lip stain, using a plumper and then MAC matte lipstick blotted off my lips to give a hint of colour. Just Bitten was on sale for $9 and I decided to give it a try. Similar to a marker for your lips with its felt tip, you have complete control when applying to get a perfect lip line. On the opposite end of the stick is a clear balm to moisturize and seal in the colour. After kissing my boyfriend a few times, the stain didn't leak on to his lips (thankfully) unlike my lipstick version. They have a great selection of colours but I went with a deep red called 'Gothic.' After viewing Jessica Biel's commercial for the stain, I was tempted to try the pink, but 'Gothic' overruled. The finish is great and it doesn't look like a lipstick, but really seals colour into your lips. Definitely worth the money if you're in the market!

This weekend, I ventured home for my cousin's bridal shower. (Of course, I also spent time with my mom shopping but I'll share my purchases later.) To my delight, I found this purse while digging in my closet. My grandma had brought it back from Hong Kong when I was much younger. It's small and simple but the embroidery is very intricate. I love the emerald green colour and I think it'll look great as a cross-body purse. I love rediscovering old things!

Oh no - more shoe temptations. I'm already thinking about fall while still grasping onto summer's coattails. Last year Jeffrey Campbell came out with a great studded military boot like the one above but I held out - wanting to see if it would make it to this season and woah - how can you not love all this hard edged detailing and floppy tongue worn so many ways?! I've always had a thing for high lace-up boots as well - back in the day I wore Missy Elliot for Adidas sneaker boots but have sold them since (a little too much for me to pull off). I feel either of these paired with the oversized off-the-shoulder knit shirt with sequined sleeves from Nasty Gal would look amazing. Military and sequin detailing - my new combo.

They come in a variety of neutral colours, but I like the red best and the distressed finish. They're on sale right now - another temptation. I do have tall cowboy boots but I feel as though a shorter boot can be practical and balance out the bold colour. (I wouldn't want tall boots in a bright colour - too much, in my opinon).

Baking Experiment

In the kitchen, I'm always delighted by a ~~mistake~~ happy accident - which occurs when I'm concocting something sweet to bake. This time, I was bored and looked into my bare cupboards for inspiration (weird I know, but sometimes it sparks your imagination when you stare at nothing). Basic baking recipes usually call for butter, eggs, oil or cream - the wet ingredients. I managed to create this delicious and incredibly moist chocolate banana bread from my lazy-state-don't-want-to-spend-money-at-the-grocery-store mind. First I mixed half cup of brown sugar with soy milk (maybe one cup of this, can't remember) then I added half teaspoon each of baking powder and baking soda, two pinches of salt and two cups of flour with a half cup of baking coco. After this turned out thick and dark brown, I added two mashed over-ripe bananas and put it in a greased loaf pan, baked at 350F until it was risen and my toothpick came out clean - this may have been over 35 minutes. I usually don't time things, I just keep an eye on their baking progress. It was really good and not too sweet! You can see the chunks of banana and once in the fridge the next day, it tastes even better. It's almost like a vegan recipe I guess - but I created it on a whim. Happy baking!

Weekend Wonders

My best friend Erin visited the city again for another epic weekend of catching up, exploring, dining, shopping and planning my trip to visit her in Denmark this fall! We began Saturday in the Glebe, indulging in chocolate peanut butter cupcakes at The Flour Shoppe. Then we walked to Elgin Street and happened upon a great local artists show in the park. Handmade jewelry, abstract oil paintings, teacup bird feeders, stained glass and nude charcoals dotted the park's perimeter. I found this amazing copper-industrial ring from a local artist who melts down her own sterling silver to make chainmaille necklaces, cuffs and thin bangles. Her stuff had a real raw edge to it and her other rings were torched and banged scrap pieces of metal. I loved this one the best because it reminds me of a computer chip or something futuristic. I also love the purple stone squashed inside as though the screws and copper plates are protecting it.

Afterwards, we had dinner at Fresco Bistro across the street: she had spinach linguini with sun dried tomatoes and I had their famed beet citrus salad with arugula, orange, pine nuts and blue benedictine. The night was capped off with caesars at Corner Stone in the market. Today we ate brunch at Lieutenant's Pump, followed by mall shopping, which proved unsuccessful. Now, I'm working on articles for the magazine, hope you have a wonderful and lazy Sunday!

There's a lot of buzz around the perfect white blouse for fall - it's so versatile and effortless, chic but not stuffy. My favourite version is A. Wang's silk-chiffon draped front top - it's flawless and I love the soft lines the design creates as well as the surprise back peep hole. It's incredibly sexy without revealing much skin at all...and with so many back-revealing designs now, the slightest sliver of back like that seems far sexier! Summer just doesn't seem right without an outdoor concert Woodstock-style. In true Canadian fashion, there was plenty of beer and pot smoking, listening to great music as the sun sets on the riverfront. Bluesfest is a huge festival every year held in the capital and this year artists including Drake, Keith Urban, Passion Pit and Weezer performed.

Happy Canada Day!!! Before celebrating my country's 143rd birthday, my best friend Erin, who flew in from her current resident country Denmark, embarked on a huge shopping spree before the great HST tax came into affect. It's been a year since we've seen each other and I think in all honesty, we didn't need this excuse to really shop together - we're very bad influences upon one another. Every store was having a sale though and I scooped up these wedges at Aldo for 60% off. I've been keeping an eye on a few different designer brands, but I fell in love with these criss cross wedges, perhaps more so because they're called the 'Kimzey'....I think it was meant to be! I will definitely wear these into fall. The clogs are super comfy and I like how small the toe is and how sharp the heel is. They were only $39 and for my more casual outfits, they will be perfect to give me that extra height without looking too over-dressed. More Canada Day photos to come!

Today, I ventured to Value Village with my friend Kim for what other bloggers elegantly call 'thrifting.' Although unsuccessful in the clothing department, I did buy some pretty green dishes and this book, published in 1900! I've decided to get into vintage book collecting - I love the smell, the bindings, the covers and pictures, the care taken into creating each one and of course the language, which sounds foreign but completely beautiful. I wish there was more thought into words like there was then! Virginibus Puerisque (To youths and maidens) is kind of like a handbook of essays on love, marriage, age, youth and technological innovation. Most were published in British Magazines between 1876 and 1879. I did a bit of research on R.L. Stevenson, who happens to also be the author of the classic Treasure Island and the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A Scottish novelist, he was also a poet and travel writer (titles I wish I could make a living off of). His book was meant to entertain the reader and also create discussion - especially with topics like A Plea for Gas Lamps. I love having an authentic glimpse into the past like this.

Vamp Treats

Recently, my bf and I got hooked on True Blood (just like evvvvveryone else) and in preparation for the third season premiere, I made cupcakes for my friend's party (more so wanting an excuse to make cupcakes). Unlike my usual chocolate flavoured baked goods, I opted for vanilla, cut open cone-like shapes in the middle after they were baked and filled them with my mom's strawberry jam. I capped them, frosted them and made fang marks so that once bitten, the cupcakes would ooze with 'blood.' I really wanted to use chocolate, but you don't get the same blood effect as with white cakes where the blood is clearly discernible. You can use anything to fill these basic cupcakes - marshmellow fluff, peanut butter, fruit, Nutella, cream cheese, frosting.....things will filling are yummy!

Skeletal Stilettos and the Refined Vamp

My favourite Canadian designers have been getting a lot of praise for their spinal cord heels, however critics have said the entire collection isn't cohesive and the vamp appeal was not desired (maybe it's all the Twilight/True Blood overload?). Instead, they thought it would have been the perfect time for them to stick with sportswear since they are known for putting a twist on prep. It seems as though many are picking up the dominatrix style lately and I am getting sick of vampires, but I thought this collection was more dark glam and edge - dare I say a refined vamp? The suiting was beautiful and excessive, a start contrast from their camping themed collection last year of patent leather tarps, t-shirts, hiking boots and tartan. The leather and wool jacket is a style I have wanted forever - maybe one winter I'll find something similar, but for now, I will keep drooling over the stilettos...le sigh.

And here is the men's collection....it starts off with the vampy-Fight Club-outfits and ends with the familiar jeans & jacket ensemble - a bit more wearable. I highly enjoyed the ode to Hockey Night in Canada with the goalie mask (another look included a leather jersey). I included a few looks at the bottom from last year's collection, just for contrast (and some pieces like the croc-jacket and worn brown leather vest I would wear!). Say what you will, I still like many of these pieces. A departure from plaid and fur is a welcomed change - just because they pay tribute to their Canadian roots doesn't mean they can't kick up the edge! Canadians are edgy too ;)

Rebellious Lips

Branching out from my go-to red hot (ruby-woo) MAC lipstick, I recycled my old MAC containers to try a new lipstick for free...Rebel. The colour is far more dark and rich than what the camera can pick up - it's more of a deep fuchsia. The finish is satin and like all MAC lipsticks, it goes on smooth and moisturizes. It's going to be my new colour for summer and I think it'll go well with almost any outfit, as long as I keep the rest of my makeup light and fresh.

Testing Kiehl's

Fine hair is a blessing and a curse - it holds curls well and it straightens well and it can look limp and lifeless. I've always wanted a thicker blonde mane (we always want what we're not born with) and while in Montreal, I popped into Kiehl's to evaluate all the magazine hype I constantly read about the company. Sure, I appreciate its long history, proven formulas and use of minimalist labeling, but I'm a firm believer in testing things out myself. This thickening shampoo, made with a multi-protein formula of omega-6, rosemary, cedarwood and peppermint is amazing! My scalp felt really clean, fresh and tingly like when I cleanse my face. My hair even looked thicker and felt better. It's my new favourite product and I'm hoping for a steady improvement with more use. It's pretty hard for girls with fine hair to find a great shampoo these days and I'm really happy I spent the moula on this!

Montreal Finds

Shopping in Montreal on a budget wasn't as difficult as I expected and I still managed to find some really original pieces from a store I have not frequented in quite some time....Urban Outfitters. Maybe it's because their Canadian headquarters are located in this great city or maybe I happened to fall into some luck, but I was really impressed with the selection. The silk maxi dress is by Sparkle and Fade and like wearing nothing....completely weightless and soft. I haven't seen anything like this online even and I was really happy to find it. With bangles, a lot of gaudy rings and a chunky necklace, I suspect I'll be wearing this many times this season. The t-shirt is from Reformed with a lace-up back. I'm really into any back detail right now, whether revealing or just interesting - annnnnd, most everyone has a nice back to show off, so why not?!

Saving up for these amazing pieces from Nasty Gal...le sigh. The sunglasses are already sold out, maybe I should bite the bullet and just buy them! haha. My greatest frustration is seeing the "SOLD OUT" sign posted below a desired item. I'll keep my eye on these pieces and hopefully they will be mine soon...so tempting! This weekend I'm off to Montreal with mon amour, to see a few friends, eat some delicious French cuisine and shop the day away.

Chain Hippy

This weekend was the Great Glebe Garage Sale, a huge rummage sale taking over the Glebe community, including local boutiques and about 6 residential streets. I dragged my boyfriend along who purchased two record albums of Rod Stewart and Bach. I was unsuccessful on the rummage-side of the sale, but managed to buy a few metres of chain at the Sassy Bead Co. for 25% off. I've always wanted to make a chain ring/bracelet and saw many variations at Etsy.com. All you need are needle-nosed pilers to open and close the links. I also made a headband which was super easy, a circle with an extra line of chain attached at either end. I'm pretty pleased with my creations ;)

I'm a big fan of simplicity and pieces you can wear solo or layered and still look just as fashionable. MINKPINK, out of Australia (one-of-my-fav-places-I-have-never-visited....yet) has created this Mummified Tee Dress, perfect for summer as a little white dress, easy to wear with heels or dress down with sandals. I feel a DIY coming on...I've seen these tee dresses in various colours at American Apparel - now to buy some jersey at Fabricland to create the strips.

Nude Heights

FINALLY I managed to find closed-toe nude patent platform pumps....phew! I bought them at Bakers and was so pleased to be find a shoe that met all of my criteria without having to save any moula first. I'm excited to get a tan and wear them with white lace dresses and mini skirts! Nude is like black, it goes with everything and because it's a less severe hue, it almost goes better with everything. Now, I'm tasked with breaking them in properly, perhaps this weekend ;)

Crescent Shell

I have a mild obsession with shells...not anything with shells glued on it, just found shells grouped in a glass bowl. My aunt gave me this African shell home decoration. It's really a necklace but a replica of an antique and far too huge to wear (and a bit heavy). I love how organic its shape and texture is. With the faint beginnings of tan lines, I've already started my summer fun!

Lake Erie

This weekend was the Canadian May 2-4, usually an excuse for copious amounts of drinking and cottaging, but this time, I spent a lovely few days in the sunshine with my lovely parents. We went fishing on Lake Erie and I've never see the lake this calm, ever! Leading to the Niagara River (which ends up at Niagara Falls), the water is always choppy and rough. It was beautiful on Sunday and the water and sky were seamless. The lighthouse is at Point Abino.

Playing Hooky

Yesterday, my boyfriend and I decided to play hooky and call in a 'sick day' to work. What better time than the middle of the week, aka Hump Day? We started off the morning with a lazy sleep-in, followed by a visit to the driving range (I hate golf, but I try for him). The weather was completely perfect: sunny with a nice breeze. In the afternoon, we went for a fantastic run along the canal and through side streets....so beautiful! Ottawa has a lot of green downtown and quaint residential streets covered by huge trees. After an intense sweat, we prettied ourselves up and grabbed ham and swiss sandwiches from Tim's. So classy, co cheap, so...Canadian. But honestly, they're so fresh and delicious! We ate them at Major Park, where the Tulip Festival is currently held. In the fall of 1945, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands presented Ottawa with 100,000 tulip bulbs. The gift was given in appreciation of the safe haven that members of Holland's exiled royal family received during the Second World War in Ottawa and in recognition of the role which Canadian troops played in the liberation of the Netherlands. Because it was near the end of the day, the festivities were packing up, but it was still pleasant to sit, eating under a tree and then walk the pathways looking out towards Quebec and the river. We concluded the day with chocolate cupcakes (then I was too full to eat dinner) and watching Fantastic Mr. Fox. Quite the day. I suggest everyone play hooky at least once this summer!

Finally the sun is out and the temperature has hit past the 20 C mark! I'm breaking out my long flowing maxi dresses and looking for a few updated versions of the current season. This one at ShopBop by Indah is handmade in Bali using plant-based dyes. Indah means "beautiful" and designer Libby De Santis' creations are made for both the hippy-yoga-loving woman to the cocktail-sipping-Manhattan stylista...or in my opinion, appeal to both of my style personnas. I am lusting, lusting lusting.....and massively lusting after this dress. It's so beautiful, I'd definitely wear it as a beach cover-up - not sure if I could pull it off in my city but possibly with a nude bandeau underneath, I could get away with it ;) Saving up for this dress! Such Great Heights

At six inches high, my new pair of black suede stilettos almost make me....5'9...haha. I always associate suede, especially black with fall or winter but I fell in love with these shoes and plan to wear them for my cousin's upcoming wedding. They are comfortable and easy to walk in and I think they're sexy without being too 'i-work-the-pole'-ish, right? Now I just need to work on tanning my pale legs.

Blue Suede Mukluks

Every Canadian - correction: every person on earth, regardless of your proximity to the equator, should own a pair of mukluks just because they are a piece of luxury. Handmade in Canada, the Manitobah brand mukluks are beautifully crafted and I can honestly say I've never seen a pair of shoes so well made. I wish it was winter just so I can sit with these toasting my feet by a fireplace.
